Stretch Marks
Stretch marks occur in the dermis of the skin which makes them more difficult to treat. When the dermis is constantly stretched over time the skin loses elasticity and the connective fibres break. Depending on your natural skin colouring they may start out as raised pink, reddish brown or dark brown striations that then turn a deeper violet or purple. Over time the marks flatten and fade to a colour a few shades lighter than your natural skin tone.
Laser treatment with IPLs and non-ablative lasers target the pigment in the skin to fade and flatten them. A series of multiple treatments will be required for visible results.
Laser therapy is often combined with aggressive microdermabrasion and tropical remedies including retinoic acid to strengthen the dermal layer and AHAs to exfoliate the skin surface.
Start treatment early. Mature or pale, flesh coloured marks do not respond well to the treatment. Repigmenting lasers can now be used to restore pigment to lighter marks.
