Fat Obsession
Fat obsession and eating disorders are on the rise, especially among young girls. Estimates are that between 5-20 per cent of sufferers die as a result of complications including metabolic and gastrointestinal problems, arrhythmia and in extreme cases suicide.
The earlier you seek help the better your change of a full recovery. Eating disorders are not a sign of a problem with food rather they are symptoms of underlying psychological and emotional problems.
Compulsive eating behavior manifests itself in several forms; bulimia nervosa, binge eating and compulsive eating. Bulimics purge by vomiting or using laxative's, some actually binge and purge several times a day. Anorexics restrict their food intake to a range that is considered far below normal. A newer disorder is known as exercise bulimia in which sufferers work out for many hours a day to burn a high number of calories.
The classic sign is a super thin woman constantly complains about how big her thighs are. Causes of eating disorders include genetics, obesity, depression, substance abuse and certain activities like gymnastics and ballet.
Treatment involves working to help restore a positive body image.
