Many women have a negative body image. They look in the mirror every day and hate what they see. The worry incessantly about their weight and appearance and may become obsessed with a perceived defect. They have a very distorted view of how they look that doesn't match how others see them.
Body dysmorphic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder and is a growing concern. Some BDD sufferers are able to cope with daily life but others experience paralyzing symptoms of depression and anxiety. This condition is thought to be associated with a chemical imbalance in the brain which may be genetically based.
The signs vary and may include comparing the appearance of the percieved defect with that of others, frequesntly examining the appearace of the specific body part, camouflaging the percieved defect, attempting to convince others that it is unattractive, avoiding looking into mirrors, constantly touching the area and paralysing feelings of self-conciousness.
